The AI readiness checklist every Shopify merchant needs

Most "improve your SEO" checklists don't map cleanly to what AI assistants actually need. This checklist is organized around the three areas that matter for AI readiness: semantic clarity, technical structure, and commerce trust signals. Work through each section for your highest-priority products first.

Semantic checklist: does your content answer real questions?

  • Does your product description directly answer a real shopping question, rather than just listing features?
  • Is it clear who the product is for, stated in the first sentence or two?
  • Does your page address how the product compares to common alternatives?
  • Do you have an FAQ section that covers the questions shoppers actually ask about this category?
  • Is the language conversational, matching how someone would actually phrase a question to an AI assistant?

Technical checklist: can AI assistants read your data?

  • Does the product have Product, Offer, and AggregateRating schema markup?
  • Is your pricing, availability, and variant data structured and current?
  • Are images described with meaningful alt text, not just filenames?
  • Does your sitemap include the product, and is it free of crawl-blocking errors?
  • Is the page fast enough to load and render without errors?

Commerce checklist: do you have trust signals AI assistants can cite?

  • Does the product have a meaningful volume of reviews, not just a handful?
  • Are ratings marked up with schema so they're machine-readable?
  • Is there any third-party coverage, comparison mention, or press that corroborates your claims?
  • Are policies like shipping, returns, and warranty clearly stated and easy to find?

Why all three areas matter together

A product can have flawless technical schema and still get skipped if the description never answers a real question. A product can have great copy and still lose to a competitor with more reviews. AI assistants weigh all three areas together, so a gap in one can undercut strength in the others. That's why a checklist works better than optimizing a single lever in isolation.

How to turn this into a score you can track

Going through this list manually for every product in a catalog isn't practical past a handful of items. Hoko turns this same checklist into an AI Readiness Level for each product, tracks completion against it, and prioritizes recommendations based on which gaps are most likely to move your visibility.
